Healthcare as a whole is in a sea of turmoil, but few have borne the brunt of these challenges like those in the diagnostic laboratory. Subjected to constant reimbursement cuts and operational scrutiny, diagnostic medicine is left gasping for air in this sink-or-swim environment. MDx NEXT was a fantastic way for visionaries in the industry to brainstorm and share best practices regarding ways to stay afloat. We found it interesting - comical, even - how the folks in the lab, working to provide the information responsible for over [70% of all clinical decisions](http://careers.nyp.org/career-areas/allied-health/clinical-laboratory.html#.U6m6cF7IbwJ), have once again found themselves at the bottom of the healthcare totem pole. Issue analysis, reimbursement trends, and identification of repeat trends are all excellent sources of data for optimization as labs look to streamline operations.
